Cypherpunk Ambassador: Dorsey's Decade Journey with Bitcoin and Bitchat's New Chapter
The True Representative of Cypherpunk: A Decade Journey of a Bitcoin Staunch Supporter
Jack Dorsey, as a long-time staunch supporter of Bitcoin, has been invested in cryptocurrency for over a decade. Even in situations where the investment outweighs the returns, he still maintains his passion for this field.
Taking the Bitcoin Lightning Network as an example, Dorsey not only launched the LDK development kit but also actively promoted the integration of Lightning Network payment functionalities into social platforms. His focus on the Bitcoin ecosystem is comprehensive, as evidenced by his re-launch of Bitchat and plans to support Nostr networking features in the future.
Although Dorsey is known as the founder of a social platform, his innovations in the fintech sector are equally remarkable. He has always been exploring more liberated forms of social interaction and decentralized network organization. The launch of Bitchat is the latest result of this exploration.
The Bitchat version launched in 2025 draws on the core principles of Bitcoin but discards the limitations of having to run on a blockchain. It is based on a local Bluetooth Mesh network, allowing it to operate completely offline, achieving true decentralization and censorship resistance. This design concept aligns with Satoshi Nakamoto's vision when creating Bitcoin, which is to enable everyone to participate in the operation of the network.
Bitchat is an offline, anonymous, free IRC-like social tool. It completely relies on local Bluetooth Mesh networks to store and propagate messages without any internet connection. The system is designed to be extremely lightweight, involving no cloud storage and lacking a permanent account system, which ensures user anonymity but also means that functionality is mainly limited to text chatting.
In terms of technical architecture, Bitchat mainly includes three major modules: information transmission, privacy protection, and networking functions. It supports point-to-point and group communication modes, employs cryptographic techniques to ensure security, and leaves possibilities for future expansion to WIFI, LoRa, and even ultrasonic communication, as well as integration with the Nostr protocol.
Although Bitchat is still in the experimental stage and its retro interface style may not align with contemporary users' aesthetics, its innovative concept is worth attention. In extreme situations, such as disaster relief scenarios, this mesh network based on multiple communication technologies could become an important backup communication means.
For cryptocurrency enthusiasts, the most anticipated aspect of Bitchat may be its potential integration with the Nostr protocol. Dorsey envisions creating a truly hardware-based social tool that can resist censorship by combining local mesh networking with the global Nostr network.
Although this vision may seem difficult to achieve at present, it is precisely this spirit of continuous experimentation and exploration that drives the development of decentralized technology. Dorsey's efforts undoubtedly show us the persistence and vision of a true Cypherpunk advocate.
