Auction giant Christie's shuts down its NFT department.
On September 9, British auction giant Christie’s is closing its digital art department dedicated to handling NFT sales, merging its operations into a broader category of art. A spokesperson for Christie’s stated that the auction house will continue to sell digital art, including NFTs, but now it will fall under the broader categories of 20th and 21st-century art. Christie’s has had a significant impact in the NFT space, having auctioned multiple digital artworks, including Mike "Beeple" Winkelmann's "Everydays: The First 5000 Days," which sold for $69.3 million in March 2021. Previously, Christie’s launched an NFT auction platform in September 2022 and formed a cryptocurrency-exclusive real estate team in July. According to the "Art Basel & UBS Art Market Report" released in April 2025, the global art market continues to decline, with worldwide art sales down 12% in 2024, totaling $57 billion, and the total value of public and private sales at auction houses dropping 20% to $23 billion.
