Can Betting Markets Shape Ethereum’s Future? Livestakes Aims to Find Out

Livestakes, a project born out of ETHGlobal, is an emerging platform that allows users to bet on hackathon winners. Could betting platforms grow and influence the future of Ethereum? The project was first publicly introduced during ETHGlobal 2025 in early July as a prediction market designed to “boost hackathon winners’ profits.” Livestakes’ content strategist, known simply as Ziz, explained how the platform pulls funds from bettors to create a separate prize pool, distinct from the global and side prizes awarded by the hackathon. “We enable the creation of a completely separate prize pool. Let’s say bettors contribute up to $100,000. That’s now an additional $100,000 allocated for the hackathon winners,” Ziz said during the launch presentation. The pool is then split 80:20 – with 80% going to the correct bettors and 20% to the winning project team. This creates a feedback loop, where successful teams can receive extra funding beyond the official prizes, potentially encouraging future innovation. But Livestakes isn’t just for bettors; it also aims to support up-and-coming developers. The three-person team behind the platform has added educational short videos for traders to learn more about the teams and their projects. Their official website is Livestakes.fun. Inspired by prediction markets like Polymarket and Kalshi, Livestakes adds a public-facing dimension. “It’s the same hype and chaotic energy you see in meme markets – but now it’s applied to hackathons,” Ziz said. “More money, more attention.”

📈 Prediction Markets as a Force in Ethereum’s Economy Platforms like Livestakes suggest a future where prediction markets aren’t just for speculation – they actively help fund and shape innovation in the Ethereum ecosystem. By allowing people to vote with their wallets, Livestakes could generate momentum for developer teams before they win anything, boosting their chances of community adoption and long-term support. In early June, there were rumors that Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin might join the next funding round for Polymarket, a leading prediction market. This follows his participation in Polymarket’s $70 million Series B funding in 2024. Prediction markets like Livestakes reflect Ethereum’s decentralized ethos – where the community can directly influence which projects get funded and which fade away.
