Hong Kong has dealt with a case of power theft for Mining virtual money, with suspects facing up to 5 years of imprisonment.

On September 9, according to reports from Dongwang, Hong Kong law enforcement recently arrested two local men for allegedly installing a "Mining Rig" in a disabled persons' residence in Cheung Sha Wan for the purpose of Virtual Money Mining, and connecting it to the residence's network and power system to steal electricity, resulting in additional electricity costs for the residence. The two were charged with "theft of electricity". After an investigation, law enforcement discovered that the residence incurred additional electricity usage costs of approximately 8,000 to 9,000 Hong Kong dollars during August. In this case, law enforcement noted that an engineering company was installing related equipment during their work to steal customers' network and electricity, thus urging citizens to arrange for personnel to monitor the installation process when commissioning engineering companies for renovation or installation work, to prevent criminals from taking the opportunity to install similar devices and cause losses. Citizens should also pay attention to their electricity bills or network usage for any unusual changes and should check or report immediately. Under the Theft Ordinance, theft of electricity can result in a maximum imprisonment of 5 years.
