The second day of the US-China Customs Tariff Trade Talks has ended: Here are the results and details!
The US-China trade talks held over the weekend in Geneva concluded with both sides sending constructive messages. Although no concrete agreement has emerged yet, officials emphasized that progress has been made.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated, "We have made significant progress in our trade discussions with China" and noted that they would share more details on Monday. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer also painted a positive picture, saying, "These two days have been quite constructive. Our differences are not as large as we previously thought."
The meetings in Geneva were held between Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng and senior US officials Bessent and Greer, with the aim of alleviating trade wars that affect global supply chains and raise concerns about economic recession.
However, the Chinese side clearly stated that it would not make concessions during the negotiation process. While the Chinese state media CGTN confirmed that the talks continued on Sunday, the Xinhua agency published a commentary stating, "Concessions do not bring respect." The agency noted that a solution could be found with the support of a fair and determined international community.
After eight hours of closed-door discussions on Saturday, there was no official statement from either side. As of Sunday evening, no concrete agreement has been announced.
Before the negotiations, China argued that the U.S. should show goodwill by lifting tariffs. However, U.S. President Donald Trump rejected these claims. Nevertheless, he implied that if the negotiations go well, tariffs imposed on China could be reduced.
Trump had also raised the import tariffs on China to as much as 145%. In response, Beijing had imposed a customs duty of 125% on American products.
According to China's export data for April, total exports increased by 8.1%, while exports to the U.S. experienced a 21% decline, marking the sharpest drop in the last 21 months. According to CNN, on Friday, no cargo ships departed from Chinese ports to the major ports on the U.S. West Coast.
