NFT artist Pplpleasr's short film streaming platform Shibuya is relaunching! Five original Shorts are available for listing to raise funds.
According to reports from Blockworks and Variety, NFT artist pplpleasr (Emily Yang) officially announced this week the launch of an independent streaming short film media and crowdfunding platform called Shibuya. This startup raised $6.9 million in funding in 2022, with investors including a16z and Variant Fund. pplpleasr has never given up on the dream of using Blockchain technology to drive the film industry. Emily Yang is a Taiwanese-American designer and artist, known by the alias pplpleasr, which she has stated originates from her love for the phrase "please" to please others; pplpleasr is an abbreviation of People Pleaser.
Shibuya will first release five original pilot dramas, allowing viewers to donate through fiat currency, and then further decide whether to fully fund these film projects. Online donations will be used entirely for film production, and if the target fundraising amount is not reached, supporters will receive a refund.
A spokesperson stated in an email that while Shibuya's website has not yet mentioned cryptocurrency, the platform is adding Blockchain and features, with Coinbase's Base chain sponsoring the launch event for the first season.
pplpleasr stated that the founding of Shibuya aims to break the traditional film studio industry system and return power to creators and fans. The first season focuses on bold original works while inviting fans to decide the fate of future content and whether the videos can continue.
Shibuya's first animated concept short film White Rabbit raised 1.2 million dollars.
As early as 2022, Shibuya released an animated short film "White Rabbit" as a concept piece for the platform. The film raised 1.2 million dollars in less than 30 minutes. pplpleasr also sold "Producer Pass" NFTs at that year's Cannes Film Festival, with each NFT valued at around 14,000 to 19,600 dollars.
Shibuya Pilot Video Introduction
Some of the Shorts premiered in Shibuya are animated, while others are live-action, with each episode lasting between 6 to 27 minutes.
Ultrasound, directed by Julian Lamadrid, tells the story of a punk rock band from New York. Each episode is shot in a single take (known as a oner in Hollywood). Oners have become quite popular lately, as seen in the recently released Adolescence on Netflix, which also uses the single take method.
Diaboli is a chilling medieval animated series that tells the story of demons, religion, and family. It runs for about seven minutes and features a dramatic, dark aesthetic and excellent voice acting, giving it a video game-like feel. This series is reminiscent of Netflix's "Love, Death & Robots."
Elle Mills' Don't Forget About Me tells the story of teenage siblings meeting their favorite childhood TV characters. Ben Christensen's The Funny Thing About Losing Socks tells a story set in a different dimension.
Spiritual 100 is a mini animated series with a sense of humor, telling the story of a poor man who participates in a reality show with 100 contestants, competing to see who has the most soul and can become a spiritual master.
NFT seems to have completely bubbled, and the artist pplpleasr, who was once extremely popular in the NFT circle, is returning to the creative market. Starting anew from the globally trending streaming Shorts, it allows viewers to see more original and artistic short films. Internet micro-dramas may become the next emerging media, and the world is investing in Shorts, but mostly focused on popular soap operas, with very few independent original short films.
NFT artist pplpleasr officially launched the blockchain-based streaming and crowdfunding platform Shibuya this week, aiming to disrupt the traditional film industry structure, allowing creators and audiences to become a community and jointly decide the fate of the works. Shibuya enables audiences to donate with fiat currency to support pilot short films, with full refunds if fundraising thresholds are not met. The platform's first season features five original short films, covering animation and live-action drama, with content ranging from punk bands to medieval horror stories, youth comedies, etc., continuing pplpleasr's innovative spirit in the NFT space by combining blockchain technology with short film trends to create a new platform for creative expression and funding models. Blockchain enthusiasts interested in short films can watch them for free at Shibuya.film and vote to support their favorite pieces.
