Trump said that the maximum rate of new tariffs may reach 70% from August 1, local time on July 4, US President Trump said that the US government will start sending letters to trading partners from the same day to set new unilateral tariff rates. Mr. Trump said the new tariffs would take effect "nine times out of ten" on Aug. 1. Trump said that starting on the 4th, the United States will send letters to several countries, and it is expected that "10 or 12" will be sent on the same day, and more letters will be sent in the coming days. Trump said he expects all of the letters to be delivered by the 9th. Previously, Trump set July 9 as the deadline for tariff talks. Regarding the new tariffs that will be set, Trump said, "tariff rates could range from 60 percent, 70 percent to 10 percent, 20 percent." "We have completed the final text, which will basically state what the tariffs will be paid by these countries," Mr. Trump said. It's unclear which countries will receive the letters, but Trump has named and "criticized" certain trading partners, including the European Union and Japan, for being too tough in the talks. Trump had this week threatened to send a letter to "spoiled" Japan setting its tariff rates at as high as 35 percent.
