Blockchain Game Track Research: Insights from Interviews with 62 Players Reveal 7 Key Findings

The blockchain gaming sector has developed for many years, yet it still hasn’t produced a true blockbuster. Although many projects have received funding and developed games, the performance of their tokens has not been satisfactory. This raises the question: should current blockchain games focus more on "gameplay" or "gamification"? What are the differences between the two? What do players really need?

To explore these issues, we conducted in-depth research with 62 players and arrived at 7 key conclusions. Before analyzing the results, let's clarify the difference between "gameplay" and "gamification."

Game vs Gamification: A Word Apart, A World Apart

Gameplay refers to the core mechanics and experience of a game, including rules, challenges, interactions, etc., which determines whether the game is fun. Gamification is the application of game elements in non-game contexts to enhance user engagement.

To put it another way, gameplay is like the main body of a cake, determining the basic flavor of the cake. Gamification, on the other hand, is like the decoration on the cake, making it look more appealing. Gamification determines "whether one wants to eat it", while gameplay determines "whether it tastes good."

In blockchain games, gameplay serves as the foundation of the game, while gamification incentivizes players to participate in Web3-specific activities through game mechanics.

BigTime is a representative work with gaming elements. It features rich scene design, the excitement of randomly dropping equipment, and a sense of growth through skill improvement via practice. On the other hand, Spacebar is a typical gamified case that offers points rewards through methods such as sign-ins and staking to attract user participation.

What Do Web3 Players Truly Value?

To understand the real needs of players, we conducted a survey of 62 players and reached 7 key conclusions:

  1. Most players have played no more than 5 blockchain games.

  2. The main channel for obtaining information about blockchain games is Twitter.

  3. 90% of players spend no more than 2 hours a day playing blockchain games, with 57.5% spending less than 1 hour.

  4. The popularity of the game is a major factor in deciding whether to enter a blockchain game.

  5. 30.6% go to play due to the monetization factor of gamification (, 29% go to play due to the game mechanics ) being diverse (.

  6. 38.7% gave up because of the disappearance of gamification ) no longer having the attraction of making money (, 38.7% gave up because the gameplay disappeared ) and it was no longer fun (.

  7. The 5 most anticipated blockchain games: Xterio ecosystem games, MATR1X, Space Nation, Pixels, BAC Games

The results of this survey are surprising. As an old player in Web3, I originally thought that everyone played blockchain games purely for the purpose of making money, but in reality, half of the players are experiencing it because the games themselves are fun.

This indicates that Web3 Gaming has reached a turning point and is beginning to return to healthy development. Currently, players value both gameplay and gamification, and are betting on both sides.

Conclusion

Whether it's the gameplay or gamification innovation, as long as there is innovation, it's good. But innovation must be based on demand, and the fundamental needs of humans haven't actually changed; only the forms of satisfying those needs have changed.

Web3 Gaming is essentially about meeting people's needs for spiritual freedom and emotional release in new forms. Although there are currently very few Web3 games that are truly playable, as long as this demand exists, Web3 Gaming will certainly have a future.

The market is waiting for a breakout. Whether it's creating gamified designs that make people "want to play" or innovating gameplay that feels "fun", the ultimate goal is to enlarge this "cake", allowing both developers and players to benefit together.
