El Salvador celebrated its anniversary and made a new Bitcoin purchase.
El Salvador has announced that it purchased 21 Bitcoins to officially celebrate the 4th anniversary of its transition to Bitcoin. Approximately 2.3 million dollars were paid for the purchase. President Nayib Bukele also tweeted, "We are buying 21 Bitcoins on Bitcoin Day."
As a reminder, the Latin American country passed the relevant law in June 2021 and later made its first official purchase in September of the same year. Bukele announced this purchase on September 7, 2021.
With the latest purchase, the number of Bitcoins owned by the government of El Salvador has reached 6313. The total value of these BTCs is also around 701 million dollars.
The obligation has been lifted, purchases continue
El Salvador's Bitcoin purchases have always been a topic of discussion. The country's agreements with the IMF and the reactions of the Western world have led to news suggesting that Bitcoin purchases will come to an end.
However, Bukele took a limited step back on this issue but did not stop Bitcoin purchases. In the first law enacted in El Salvador, it was stated that businesses could not refuse payment from those who wanted to pay with Bitcoin, but this obligation was removed in the recent loan agreement made with the IMF.
Although it has been claimed that the country ended its policy of buying 1 BTC every day, Bukele denied these claims.
In March, Bukele tweeted, "If purchases didn't stop during previous tough times, they won't stop now."
El Salvador had purchased its first BTCs at around the $50,000 level, which could be considered high depending on the day's conditions.
