Ian Hogarth, a tech entrepreneur and prominent investor in artificial intelligence, will lead its new taskforce to examine the security risks posed by artificial intelligence (AI), the British government said on Sunday.

Last week, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak called on the UK to act quickly to maintain its status as a tech hub and urged tech leaders to seize the opportunities and challenges presented by AI.

Sunak seeks the UK to play a "leading" role in the development of global artificial intelligence, and he wants the UK to become the "base camp" for global AI regulation. The UK will host a summit on the security risks of artificial intelligence later this year.

**Hogarth has been chosen to head the UK's AI Foundation Model Taskforce, tasked with advancing cutting-edge security research ahead of the summit. **He will report directly to Sunak and UK Technology Secretary Chloe Smith.

In April this year, the British government pledged to invest 100 million pounds to establish an AI basic model working group. The working group will study the risks associated with artificial intelligence and conduct security research. Hogarth was also the co-founder of Internet music company SongKick, which was sold to Warner Music in 2017.
