Being paid in BTC has been mocked! New York City Mayor retorts: Are the people who laughed at me regretting now?

New York City Mayor Eric Adams has once again attracted attention. He used a relaxed and slightly sarcastic tone at a press conference on Tuesday to clap back at those who had once criticized him. He laughed and said, "Remember when I first received my salary in Bitcoin, weren't you all laughing at me?" Then, with a triumphant tone, he added, "Now, go take a look at my BTC."

When Eric Adams took office as New York City mayor in early 2022, he received his first three paychecks in BTC and Ether. According to publicly available data, these cryptocurrencies were worth about $32,000 in total at the time.

The New York City mayor declined to disclose how much Crypto Assets he holds on Tuesday. However, according to his recent financial disclosure statement, the value of his BTC holdings is between $5,000 and $54,999 by the end of 2023.

Since then, the price of Bitcoin has more than doubled. At the time of writing, the price of Bitcoin has exceeded $100,000, while Ether has surged to $3,800.

Eric Adams said, 'You all laughed at me,' imitating those who mocked him, saying, 'Do you receive your first 3 salaries in Bitcoin? Are you kidding me?'

Eric Adams said, 'Now you wish you had done the same back then.' He laughed again.

Just as Eric Adams is embroiled in multiple controversies, his relationship with Cryptocurrency is also controversial. After he received large salaries in BTC and Ethercoin, he fell into a heavily criticized predicament for not disclosing his Cryptocurrency holdings in a mandatory report to the New York Conflict of Interest Board.

Afterwards, Eric Adams faced a significant increase in legal troubles. In September of this year, Eric Adams became the first mayor in the history of New York City to be criminally charged during his tenure.

The US Department of Justice accused him of accepting hospitality and benefits from Turkish government officials and businessmen, including luxury travel accommodation and other perks, in exchange for which the latter obtained the interests of the Turkish nation in New York.

Despite Eric Adams being indicted, he has repeatedly refused calls to resign in recent months. He has also started to cozy up to Trump, who will be inaugurated as the President of the United States on January 20 next year and will control the Department of Justice.

Despite being a Democrat, Eric Adams said at a press conference on Tuesday regarding Trump: 'I have stated that I will not be against this administration. I will work with this administration.'

Eric Adams is not the only elected official to receive their salary in cryptocurrency. For example, Miami Mayor Francis Suarez has also stated that his entire salary is paid in BTC.
