Will Intel be the last hope of American manufacturing? It is rumored that Nvidia and Broadcom are conducting internal tests on AI chips.
In the marketplace, there are no permanent enemies, nor are there permanent friends. This old saying just happens to verify the intricate relationships in the current AI era. Two informants revealed to the media that Nvidia and Broadcom are conducting chip testing for Intel. If the testing is successful, Intel can obtain a multi-million-dollar AI chip manufacturing contract. In the past, Intel used to be the leader, but stagnation in technology allowed Nvidia to surpass in chip design. Now Intel needs Nvidia and Broadcom for a piece of the pie.
As President Trump vigorously promotes the semiconductor manufacturing industry in the United States, Intel, a long-established company, has become a must-support American enterprise. Interestingly, in Trump's previous emphasis on Taiwan taking away a large part of the semiconductor manufacturing industry, one can vaguely sense that even if TSMC were to relocate entirely to the United States and become American Semiconductor, it would not be Trump's ultimate goal. American manufacturing still needs to be purely American-born.
Will the struggling Intel soon make a comeback in blood?
The test between Nvidia and Broadcom this time used the Intel 18A Process ) chip processing process ), which has been developed and researched by Intel for many years and is considered by Intel as a wafer manufacturing technology that can compete with Taiwan's TSMC (. In addition to Nvidia and Broadcom, the two companies are testing the effectiveness of Intel 18A, and it is reported that AMD (Super Micro )) is also testing Intel. However, all three companies declined to comment on media inquiries.
According to reports, these tests were not conducted on fully designed chips, but to determine the capability of Intel's 18A process. Chip designers sometimes test specific components of the chip before deciding whether to mass-produce the complete design. This testing is currently ongoing and will continue for several months. The specific completion time is not yet clear.
However, testing does not guarantee that Intel will ultimately win the new contract. Last year, Broadcom's chip testing at Intel disappointed both senior management and engineers, as Broadcom was evaluating Intel's foundry process capabilities.
Former Intel CEO Gelsinger ( Kissinger ) resigned last year. During his tenure, he fought for a new chip contract for Intel. However, a deep-throated person who has seen the contract indicated that although Intel obtained early approval, it may be stuck under the constraints of third-party intellectual property rights, delaying the delivery of chips to customers.
The Intel board fired Kissinger early last December, and the interim CEO announced a temporary suspension of the process, which will delay Intel's own artificial intelligence chips until at least 2027.
The author argues that Intel is considered the only and last hope for the United States to produce advanced semiconductor wafers domestically. Despite Trump's support and blessing, the biggest fatal flaw is the lagging process technology. Earlier, Huang Renxun met with President Trump, and no one knew the specifics of their discussion. However, it is conceivable that in order for American wafer fabs to receive orders, critical manufacturing technology is still needed. Intel's technology seems unable to meet the standards of Nvidia, Broadcom, and AMD. But relatively speaking, the lack of American manufacturing technology undoubtedly adds a buffer period for TSMC, enough to bring technology and talent to the United States within Trump's term limit.
